This September is Catch the Bus Month run by Bus Users UK and Walsall Community Transport are celebrating.
Buses are good for our health, good for the economy and good for the environment. They get us to work, shops and leisure activities. Pre-Covid, bus passengers boosted the UK economy by £64 billion each year. Buses reduce congestion and help clean our air. Switching from car to bus once a month would mean 1 billion fewer car journeys. They also ensure we can all lead active and fulfilling lives. Loneliness and isolation costs the UK nearly £10,000 per person, per year.
Claire Walters, Chief Executive of Bus Users UK the charity behind Catch the Bus Month said: “Buses are a lifeline for millions and bring huge health, social and environmental benefits to us all. As the cost of living crisis continues to bite, we need affordable, sustainable transport more than ever so it’s great to see Walsall Community Transport celebrating these vital services and encouraging more people to get on board.”
Bus Users are a charity that campaigns for inclusive, accessible transport. They are the only approved Alternative Dispute Resolution Body for the bus and coach industry and the designated body for handling complaints under the Passenger Rights in Bus and Coach Legislation. They are also part of a Sustainable Transport Alliance, a group working to promote the benefits of public, shared and active travel.
Alongside their complaints work they investigate and monitor services and work with operators and transport providers to improve services for everyone. They run events, carry out research, respond to consultations, speak at government select committees and take part in industry events to make sure the voice of the passenger is heard.
